Why Buy Chai?
Yes, you can buy chai in tea bags, order it in coffee houses, and even get it in powdered form. At our house though, make our own. It's simple, delicious, and wonderful with coconut milk! Oh, and making it yourself allows you to experiment with flavor profiles and discover what you like best. Sometimes I like it a wee bit more peppery while others I like the punch of the ginger. Since I make it every week I get lots of opportunities to play with it. I've included the basic recipe. I'd love to know how yours comes out!
Ingredients
- 1 gallon filtered water
- 3 tea balls filled with quality black tea
- 14 allspice berries
- 9-10 cardamom pods cracked
- 1 Tablespoon whole cloves
- 1/2 inch raw peeled ginger
- 1/4 cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1/4 nutmeg nut
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to the pot and bring to a boil. You can wrap all your spices in cheese cloth or strain them out after the tea is finished brewing. I prefer the strain after method; I pour our cooled tea through a fine mesh strainer and discard the used up spices.
